My Planner
This essay is too
short so let me know if there are any places where I can elaborate. Also, I’m
thinking of cutting the first and/or second paragraph. What do you guys
think?
When I first read this question I started thinking about survival
strategies I would use to survive in the wild if I was lost without supplies.
The things that came to my mind were building fires, scavenging for food,
finding water, climbing trees, making shelter, etc. I quickly realized that I
didn’t actually have any of these skills or at least not that I know of because
I’ve never been put in a situation where I have to use skills like these.
The only thing that I really have to survive is school--which, to be
honest, is not an easy task. My go to survival tool at school is definitely my
planner. Everyday when fourth period roles around I pull out my planner and
record every assignment, activity, or meeting that I have coming up.
When Ms. Morford told us that all of the subbies were going to get a
free planner, I couldn’t help but feel excited. I had heard countless stories
of the huge workload at Uni and my subbie self was determined to stay on top of
things and avoid procrastination. And what better way to do that then with my
planner? I dubiously wrote down every assignment that all of the teachers gave
us and took note of the list of things that Ms. Morford reminded us of
everyday. At some point during the year I even started highlighting my different
assignments in random colors to make my planner look pretty.
When Freshman year rolled around I immediately assumed that I would need
a planner. After subbie year, using my planner had become a habit. I spent at
least an hour trying to find the perfect because if the planner wasn’t right,
it would mess up how I wrote all of my assignments down.
I know that my planner habits are extra. I color code each subject
and also all of my different activities. I write down every single practice I
have. I even write down meetings I have at school that happen every week. I
keep a to do list in my planner and I also put sticky notes in it when I run
out of space. I know all of this stuff is over the top but I never forget
assignments so at least it’s effective.
Not only is my planner useful, it also helps keep me calm. If I have a
ton of assignments to do, the first thing I do is write everything down in my
planner. I can see everything I have to do in one place and I can make a game
plan. I know that if I have everything written down in my planner I’m not going
to forget anything. If I’m organized than it makes everything I have to do seem
more manageable.
I know that my planner can’t do my assignments for me but it definitely
helps me feel better about everything that’s going on at school. Plus, whenever
I have a feeling that I’m forgetting an assignment or something else I can just
check my planner. My planner is just one thing that makes school a little bit
less stressful.
I think you could keep the first and second paragraph, but only if it is worded less as a thought process. The second paragraph is useful but it is connected to the contents of the first. In terms of places where you could elaborate, maybe you could provide some anecdote related to using your planner. I think this would make your essay even more effective. Great job!
ReplyDeleteI love the use of a rhetorical question in your intro and starting off with a retelling of an experience was affective. I think that your paragraphs in your essay are a good start and I think that if you expand on all of them, this can turn into a very effective essay. I think that another story or narrative would be nice but overall just expand! Great essay!!
ReplyDeleteTo answer your question, I think you could elaborate on how you write down your to do tasks. You did say that you had to find the perfect planner to accommodate the very specific way you like to plan your day, how would you describe that perfect planner? Maybe you could describe the process you go through to find that perfect layout and tune your preferences and why you like it that way. You included some detailed thoughts about the planner, and I'd love to know more!
ReplyDeleteI agree that you should cut the first two paragraphs. The third paragraph is a perfectly good start to the essay and starts out in a far more interesting manner. Maybe including some specific stories of times when the planner proved especially useful would add something to the essay. While there are some modifications to make, it was a good essay and I found it really interesting.
